Overview

Tour Type: Family,Honeymoon,Long Haul,Romantic

France, in Western Europe, encompasses medieval cities, alpine villages and Mediterranean beaches. Paris, its capital, is famed for its fashion houses, classical art museums including the Louvre and monuments like the Eiffel Tower. The country is also renowned for its wines and sophisticated cuisine. Lascaux’s ancient cave drawings, Lyon’s Roman theater and the vast Palace of Versailles attest to its rich history.
Northern highlights include the Loire Valley’s majestic chateaux; Normandy’s WWII sites and iconic Mont-St-Michel; WWI Western Front battlefields; and Brittany’s rugged coast. To the east are German-influenced architecture and food, and the French Alps’ ski resorts. In the south, Provence is home to lavender fields, and the Riviera glitters with glamorous towns and beaches. Bordeaux and Burgundy produce renowned wines, while Champagne gives the bubbly stuff its name. Along with cheeses such as Camembert, Brie, and Roquefort, the local fare includes Brittany's crêpes and Burgundy's coq au vin.
Brussels is Belgium’s capital and home to the European Union headquarters. The Grand-Place square at the heart of the city has shops and cafes inside ornate 17th-century guild houses and the intricate Gothic Hôtel de Ville (town hall) with a distinctive bell tower. The 19th-century Maison du Roi houses the Musée de la Ville de Bruxelles city-history museum, including costumes for the city’s famed Manneken Pis statue.
Colorful murals throughout Brussels share the stage with the Centre Belge de la Bande Dessinée, devoted to comic-strip art. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium encompasses art from Old Masters to the present, and the Magritte Museum presents hundreds of works by the renowned Belgian surrealist. The European Quarter contains the European Parliament building, dinosaur skeletons at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Parc Léopold, and art-nouveau mansions. Built for a 1958 World’s Fair, the iconic Atomium offers panoramic views. South of the city, 14th-century Beersel Castle has steepled towers, a drawbridge, and a moat.
The Netherlands, a country in northwestern Europe, is known for a flat landscape of canals, tulip fields, windmills, and cycling routes. Amsterdam, the capital, is home to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the house where Jewish diarist Anne Frank hid during WWII. Canalside mansions and a trove of works from artists including Rembrandt and Vermeer remain from the city's 17th-century "Golden Age."
Rotterdam is a major port city with bold modern architecture. The university town of Utrecht is home to lively canalside cafes and the 14th-century Dom Tower. Southern Maastricht has a vibrant culinary scene, old churches, and medieval city walls. In the north, the countryside between Leiden and Den Helder is one of the most well-known places to see tulip fields and windmills. The seaside towns of the Wadden (Frisian) Islands are busy summer resorts with a quirky local pastime, wadlopen (mudflat walking).
